St Jeromes Laneway Festival is known for showcasing rising talent and this year was no exception, featuring FKA Twigs, Courtney Barnett and Mac DeMarco amongst some more well known artists such as Flying Lotus and St Vincent. St Vincent were actually my key into the festival to shoot. A friend of mine alerted me to the fact that he was hosting their stay in Byron Bay, and quickly put me in touch with their tour manager in order to get a media pass to the festival. How nice are people, seriously! I had a great time and got so much out of shooting the amazing artists on the day.Read More
MONA FOMA is the Museum of New and Old Art's Festival of Music and Art. It is curated by Brian Ritche of the Violent Femmes; he brings taste and eccentricity into Hobart, by means of art and music. This incredible festival hosts the most diverse slate of art I've ever witnessed in one place - from The Young Wagilak Group and The Australian Art Orchestra, to cult favorite heavy thrash Marduk, from Sweden. The program has something in there just waiting for you to hear, and you will walk away changed. I saw Li Binyuan smash 200 hammers with a hammer.
This gallery includes photographs from MOFO (Paul Kelly and the Merri Sessions, Ben Frost, The Australian Art Orchestra and The Young Wagilak Group, Speak Percussion + loads more), as well as Matthew Barney's hell-bent exhibition, River of Fundament, at MONA.Read More
Lost Paradise is a new, boutique music festival held at Peats Ridge, about 20 minutes from Gosford. Lost Paradise a different kind of festival - there are daily feasts, dress-up parlours, friendly people, yoga each morning, a creek to roll into each morning, easy-going staff, and plenty of room to move (5000 capacity). And then there was a fantastic line up - this gallery includes some of them: Hiatus Kaiyote, Bad Bad Not Good, Banoffee, Boy & Bear, The Preatures, Bob Moses, Terry Farley, Pond, Ball Park Music, and Fantastic Man - not to mention the good looking folk!Read More
I've been listening to Flying Lotus for many years and admired his development as a unique and creative artist. Flying Lotus played at the Tivoli in Brisbane back in 2010, so it's been a long time coming for the return. The Operatives have done it again, and produced a really good return show, featuring Layer 3 projections, making for a really whelmed crowd. These photos are actually video stills, as I was filming this show for The Operatives.Read More
THE TROUBLE WITH TEMPLETON (TTWT) are a banana bunch of babes. With their lead singer, Tom Calder, having just won the Grant McLennan fellowship the night before, this show marked both a celebration for the band, and the opening of a superb new venue space, The Triffd. TTWT played new songs, with a new member, at Brisbane's newest venue and I used a new lens. They are about to start recording a new album.Read More
The Australian Art Orchestra, directed by Peter Knight, is a force. It is a collaborative platform to showcase the creative, progressive, and experimental contemporary music Australia has to offer. These photos are from the AAO's 20 year anniversary show, held at The Malthouse Theatre, and The Quartetthaus, in Melbourne's Southbank. This special anniversary show was attended by heavy supporters of the AOO as well as new listeners, and was broadcast live on the ABC. The Malthouse Theatre show featured compositions by Paul Grabowsky and upcoming composer Austin Buckett. A rotating performance space, The Quartetthaus, hosted some truly moving solo performances from Australia's most progressive and creative soloists including saxophonist Sandy Evans, turntablist Martin Ng, bassist Samuel Pankhurst, percussionist Vanessa Tomlinson, violinist Erkki Veltheim, and trumpeter Scott Tinkler.
The rehearsals were held at AAO director Peter Knight's printing-press-converted-home-space, which are also in the gallery!Read More
Bluejuice call it quits. I thought I'd ask friend and singer, Jacob Stone, if I could shoot their show.Read More
First and foremost, TEEBS can be introduced as an artist. He is also a musician and producer. From the same team through brough Flying Lotus over earlier in the year, The Operatives brought TEEBS to Australia - this show was all about the chill - caught on video.Read More
I've known the sweet soul that is Tim, AKA Tigermoth for a while now - his fine music led me to meeting him at a show in Brisbane. Tigermoth passionately uses his trusty MPC, creating his own vibe of beats fusing oriental with the new. He works hard but still has time for everyone. This photo series is from his show with JONWAYNE at Coninston Lane (now The Woolly Mammoth) and also features JONWAYNE. Hear more of Tigermoth's music HERE.Read More
